The verdict in brief
A Canva website is good enough for a quick, simple page, but it is a weak choice for the site your business depends on.
It suits something you need online this afternoon: an event page, a wedding or party invitation, a photographer's portfolio, a menu for a pop-up, or a single page that says who you are and how to reach you. If your team already designs posters and social graphics in Canva, the learning curve is close to zero.
For a business site, Canva Websites gives you limited search settings, basic forms at best, no real blog or content system, no proper shop, and little control over speed, consent and structure. Once you want Google traffic, a steady flow of enquiries, two languages and room to add pages every month, you outgrow it. If you are still at the planning stage, our guide on how to make a website from plan to launch walks through the options before you commit to any tool.
Below we check Canva against the things a Bangkok business site actually has to do, section by section, and finish with a scorecard.
What Canva Websites is
Canva Websites is a publishing option inside Canva, the design tool. You pick a website template or start from any design, lay out your content as a set of pages, and press Publish. Each page of the design becomes a section or page of the site, and Canva can turn headings into a simple navigation menu. Everything you know from making slides or posters carries over: drag, drop, change fonts, swap photos.
How publishing works
According to Canva's help pages, you can publish to a free Canva domain (an address on canva.site) or connect a domain you own or buy through Canva. Using your own domain is what makes the site look like a business rather than a side project, and it matters for search too, as the next section explains. Canva's help centre states which domain options need a paid plan, so check the current details there before you plan around them.
What you do not get
There is no server you control, no plugin system, no database of posts or products, and no staging copy to test changes. The site is essentially a published design. That simplicity is the appeal, and also the ceiling.
What does Canva let you control for search?
Canva's help article on searchability describes a small set of controls: a site title, a description that search engines may show under your link, and settings for how pages appear when shared. Its website settings also cover page names and paths. That is enough to avoid a blank result on Google. It is not enough to compete for a phrase like "dental clinic Sukhumvit" against sites that were planned for search.
The free domain problem
Canva's own guidance notes that on a free Canva domain you cannot verify the site in Google Search Console, because you do not control the domain. Without Search Console you cannot see which queries bring visitors, submit a sitemap or find indexing errors. Put simply: if search matters to you at all, use your own domain from day one.
What is still missing
- No control over heading structure beyond what the design implies, so a page can end up with several "main" headings or none.
- No structured data, such as LocalBusiness details or FAQ markup.
- No separate Thai and English URLs with language tags, which a bilingual Bangkok business needs.
- Limited room for the depth of text that helps a service page rank, since every word sits inside a visual layout.
Forms, leads and growth
A business site earns its keep by turning visitors into enquiries. In Canva the practical options are a link to email, a phone number, a WhatsApp or LINE link on a button, Canva's own forms, or an embedded form from another service.
Canva's help centre notes that form responses on Canva Websites are anonymous, so check exactly what each option records. Each works for simple needs, but test it against what a proper enquiry flow does: required fields, a consent checkbox, a copy of the lead in your inbox and a record you can export. A clinic website taking appointment requests or a hotel website handling group enquiries will feel that gap within weeks.
No blog, no content system
Every new page means designing another page by hand. There is no post list, no categories, no author or date, no way for a colleague to add an article without touching the layout. For a business that plans to publish guides, news or project updates, this alone decides the question.
Selling and members
Canva does not give you a cart, stock, shipping rules or payment methods such as PromptPay and cash on delivery, so it is not a shop. Linking out to a separate store works as a stopgap. Anything with logins, paid content or member areas is out of scope too; membership websites need a real platform with user accounts and access rules.
Thai text, speed and PDPA
Thai text
Canva includes fonts that support Thai script, and Thai headings can look good. Problems show up in the details: some decorative fonts lack Thai glyphs and fall back to a different face, tone marks can clip when line height is tight, and long Thai lines do not always wrap at sensible points because Thai has no spaces between words. Preview every page on a phone before publishing, and stick to fonts you have seen render Thai cleanly.
Speed on mobile
Many Bangkok visitors arrive on a phone, often on mobile data while commuting. Canva designs tend to be image heavy, with large photos, text set as graphics and effects that add weight. You have little control over image compression, lazy loading or script output, so a pretty page can still load slowly.
PDPA
Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act applies to personal data you collect through a form, a chat button or analytics. You need a clear privacy notice and, where you use non-essential cookies or tracking, a way for visitors to consent. You have far less control over cookies and consent wording than on a platform you manage, so check what your published site actually sets, review Canva's current settings, and write a privacy page yourself.
Scorecard for a business site
Here is how Canva compares with a WordPress site built for a small business, on the points that decide whether a site pays for itself. Canva's column reflects its help pages at the time of writing; features change, so confirm anything you depend on.
| What a business site needs | Canva Websites | WordPress built for you |
|---|---|---|
| Launch speed | Hours for a simple page | About 15 days for a typical project |
| Own domain and Search Console | Yes with your own domain; not on the free domain | Yes |
| Page titles, descriptions, paths | Basic controls | Full control per page |
| Structured data and bilingual URLs | No | Yes |
| Enquiry forms with consent | Canva forms, links or embedded forms | Built in |
| Blog and content growth | Manual pages only | Posts, categories, editors |
| Online shop with PromptPay and couriers | No | Yes, with WooCommerce |
| Thai text | Works with care over fonts | Chosen and tested Thai fonts |
| Best for | Events, portfolios, one-pagers | Sites that must rank and bring enquiries |
When should you move off Canva, and to what?
Keep the Canva site while it does its job. Move when you notice any of these: you want to appear for searches beyond your own name, enquiries arrive as scattered messages you cannot track, you need Thai and English versions, or you keep wishing you could publish an article. If you are unsure whether a proper site is worth it at all, our piece on why your business needs a website sets out the business case.
Other shortcuts to judge the same way
AI builders promise a similar shortcut: describe your business and get a site in minutes. Apply the same checklist to them. Our article on using AI for a website redesign covers where those tools help and where they fall short.
Moving to WordPress
There is no export from Canva to WordPress, so the move is a rebuild. Collect your text, photos and brand colours, list every page and the address it lives at, then rebuild on WordPress and point your domain to the new site. If you want to do it yourself, follow our step-by-step guide on building a WordPress website yourself. If you would rather hand it over, we design and build small business websites on WordPress; our Starter package starts from THB 10,000 for up to five pages with WhatsApp and LINE buttons, on-page SEO and PDPA cookie consent. Prices are indicative and the final figure is set in your written quote. For a fuller breakdown, see what drives WordPress website cost in Bangkok.
