Shopify SEO for Thai stores: what the platform handles and what you must do

Shopify gets the technical basics right and fixes the structure for you. Rankings for a Thai store come from what you do inside it.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify is a solid platform for SEO, with one trade-off: it makes several technical decisions for you, and you cannot undo them.

On the plus side, every store gets an automatic XML sitemap at /sitemap.xml, canonical tags on products and collections, HTTPS, editable titles and meta descriptions, and a robots.txt file you can customise through the robots.txt.liquid template if you really need to. You do not install plugins to get those basics.

On the other side, the URL structure is fixed, apps add weight to your theme, and a Thai version needs Shopify Markets and translated content set up properly. So SEO on Shopify is less about settings and more about the parts that are yours: product and collection copy, handles, images, structure, and how you move an existing store across.

This guide assumes the platform is already chosen. If you are still weighing it up, read our summary of Shopify's strengths and weaknesses for Thai sellers first. It belongs to our wider set of guides on SEO, speed and analytics.

The URL structure you cannot change

Every Shopify store uses the same folders: products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, information pages under /pages/, and blog posts under /blogs/ followed by the blog's name. You can change the last part of each URL, called the handle, but not the prefix. There is no way to make a product sit at yourstore.com/silk-scarf/.

Owners moving from WordPress sometimes worry this will hurt rankings. In practice it does not matter much. Search engines rank pages on content, relevance and quality, and a word like "products" in a URL is neither a benefit nor a penalty. What does matter is what you control:

  • Short, readable handles. /products/thai-silk-scarf-indigo beats /products/copy-of-scarf-new-2.
  • Latin script handles. Thai characters in a handle become long percent-encoded strings when copied into LINE chats or emails. Keep handles in simple English words, even for Thai content.
  • Stable handles. When you edit a handle, Shopify offers to create a redirect from the old URL. Leave that option ticked.

Decide your naming pattern for handles before you import a large catalogue. Fixing hundreds of handles later is tedious and creates a long redirect list.

Collections, products and duplicate URLs

A product that belongs to three collections can be reached at several addresses. There is the main one, /products/thai-silk-scarf, and collection-aware versions such as /collections/scarves/products/thai-silk-scarf and /collections/gifts/products/thai-silk-scarf. Shopify adds a canonical tag on all of them pointing to the main /products/ URL, so search engines are told which version counts.

That canonical is a hint, not an order, and it works best when the rest of the site agrees with it. If your theme's collection grids link to the collection-aware URLs, every internal link points at a non-canonical page. Crawlers then spend time on duplicates, and signals are split across addresses.

What to check in your theme

  • Open a collection page, hover a product, and look at the link. If it contains /collections/.../products/, the theme is using collection-aware URLs.
  • Many current themes link straight to /products/ already. If yours does not, a developer can change the product card snippet so links use the plain product URL.
  • Filtered and sorted collection URLs, with parameters for price, colour or sort order, should not be linked from menus or submitted in the sitemap.

The same logic applies to tag pages inside collections. They are useful for shoppers, but they rarely deserve to be indexed as separate pages.

Product and collection pages that can rank

This is where most Thai stores lose ground, and it has nothing to do with Shopify. Many sellers list the same product on Shopee, Lazada and their own store, and paste the same description into all three, often the supplier's text. Marketplaces have far more authority than a new store, so when search engines see identical copy, the marketplace listing usually wins, or the manufacturer's page does.

Make the store's version the best one

  • Write your own description for the store: materials, sizing for Thai buyers, care instructions, what is in the box, delivery options. Keep the marketplace listings shorter.
  • Answer questions buyers ask in chat. If customers keep asking on LINE whether an item fits a particular model, put the answer on the page.
  • Give collections an introduction. A collection page with only a product grid has little text to rank. Two or three helpful paragraphs about choosing within that range give it substance.

Titles, descriptions and handles

In each product's search engine listing section, set a title that names the product the way people search for it, such as "Indigo Thai silk scarf, hand-woven", rather than an internal code. Write a meta description that mentions what makes your offer useful, such as delivery by KEX Express (formerly Kerry Express) or Flash Express, or payment by PromptPay or cash on delivery. Keep variant details, like colour and size, in variants rather than separate products, unless each variant is searched for on its own.

Thai and English stores

If you sell to Thai customers and to expats or overseas buyers, one Shopify store can serve both languages, and the same rules apply as for any multilingual website. The setup has three parts.

  1. Add the language. In the store's language settings, add Thai (or English, if Thai is your primary language) and publish it.
  2. Translate the content. Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app lets you translate products, collections, pages, navigation and theme text, with an option for automatic translation of a limited amount of content. Other translation apps exist; whichever you use, have a native speaker edit the Thai. Machine-translated product copy reads badly and sells badly.
  3. Use Markets for the structure. With Shopify Markets, each language can live in its own subfolder, such as /th/ or /en/. Shopify then adds hreflang tags so search engines can show Thai searchers the Thai page and English searchers the English one.

Check the result, not just the settings. View the page source of a translated product and confirm the hreflang tags list both languages and point to matching pages. Make sure the translated title and meta description are filled in, since an English title on a Thai page is a common gap. And translate the small things too: the cart, checkout labels, shipping messages and email notifications.

Feature details in Markets and translation apps change often, so confirm the current behaviour in Shopify's help centre before planning around them.

Apps, themes and speed

Shopify hosts every store on the same fast infrastructure, so server speed is rarely the problem. The slowdowns come from what you add. Each review widget, pop-up, chat bubble, upsell tool and tracking script tends to load its own JavaScript and CSS, often on every page. Install ten apps and a light theme turns into a heavy one, especially on a phone over mobile data. Our website speed optimization work usually starts with that app list.

Keeping a store lean

  • Audit apps every few months. Remove the ones nobody uses. Uninstalling may leave code behind in the theme, so check for leftover snippets.
  • Prefer theme features over apps. Many current themes include size charts, badges and announcement bars that used to need an app.
  • Choose themes on performance, not demos. Test the theme's demo store on a mid-range Android phone before buying.
  • Size images before upload. Shopify serves resized images, but huge originals and autoplay video banners still slow the first view.

Layout choices affect rankings in ways beyond speed, from how clear the navigation is to what shows first on mobile. Our article on design decisions and their effect on SEO covers those, and the technical SEO checklist for new websites lists the platform-neutral checks to run before launch.

Structured data, without promises

Most Shopify themes output Product structured data on product pages: name, image, price, currency and availability, taken from the product's own fields. Many also add Organization or BreadcrumbList markup. This helps search engines read your catalogue accurately, and it can make products eligible for richer search displays. Eligibility is not a promise; search engines decide what to show.

Common problems

  • Duplicate markup. An SEO app and the theme both output Product data, so the page carries two conflicting versions. Keep one source.
  • Review stars that do not exist. Some apps add rating markup even when there are no reviews on the page. Only mark up reviews visitors can see.
  • Wrong currency or stale availability. Check that prices show in THB for the Thai market and that sold-out items are marked as out of stock.

Image alt text

Every product image has an alt text field. Describe the image plainly, such as "indigo silk scarf folded on a wooden table", rather than repeating the product title on every photo. It helps visually impaired shoppers and image search.

Test a few product URLs in Google's Rich Results Test after any theme or app change. Many Shopify SEO apps mostly automate alt text, meta fields and structured data; useful for large catalogues, unnecessary for a small store that fills in the fields properly.

Blogging on Shopify

Shopify includes a basic blog. It lacks the flexibility of a dedicated blogging platform, with simple tags rather than categories and fixed /blogs/ URLs, but for a store it is usually enough.

The value is in topics buyers actually search before purchase: how to choose a size, how to care for a material, which product suits a Bangkok condo or a humid climate. Link each post to the relevant collection, and link collections back to the guides. If the business runs mainly on content, with a store attached, compare this with our WordPress SEO guide, since WordPress handles large content libraries more flexibly.

Moving to Shopify without losing traffic

Moving from WooCommerce, another platform or an old custom site means almost every URL changes, because Shopify's fixed prefixes rarely match the old structure. Without redirects, every link and ranking that pointed to the old pages leads to a 404. Shopify's URL redirects tool and its bulk CSV import handle 301 redirects well; the work is in building an accurate map. Use the checklist below.

If you would rather have the move, or a new store, handled for you, our Shopify store development in Thailand covers setup, PromptPay, cards, COD, Thai couriers, product import and e-Tax invoice setup. The E-commerce package starts from THB 50,000, indicative and one-time, with the final price in your written quote; see what an e-commerce website costs for the details. A typical project takes around 15 days, though large catalogues can take longer. We do not sell ongoing SEO; the aim is a store that launches with its foundations right. • Export every old URLCrawl the old site and export its sitemap. Include products, categories, pages, blog posts and images that get traffic.
  • Map old to newMatch each old URL to its closest new Shopify URL in a spreadsheet. Avoid sending everything to the homepage.
  • Import redirectsUpload the map as 301 redirects through Shopify's URL redirects tool or CSV import before switching the domain.
  • Carry over titles and descriptionsCopy the SEO titles, meta descriptions and alt text that were working, rather than starting blank.
  • Switch and testAfter the domain points to Shopify, test a sample of old URLs, forms, checkout and PromptPay payments.
  • Submit the new sitemapAdd the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the coverage and 404 reports for the following weeks.

Common questions

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, for most stores. It handles sitemaps, canonical tags, HTTPS and fast hosting automatically, and every product, collection and page has editable SEO fields. The limits are a fixed URL structure and the weight apps add to a theme. Rankings then depend on what you control: original product and collection copy, sensible handles, image alt text and a lean theme.

Can I change Shopify's URL structure?

Only partly. The prefixes /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ are fixed on every Shopify store. You can edit the handle, the part after the prefix, for each item. The fixed prefixes do not harm rankings in practice. Keep handles short, readable and in Latin script, and let Shopify create a redirect whenever you change one.

How do I add a Thai version of my Shopify store?

Add Thai as a published language in the store settings, translate products, collections, pages and theme text with Shopify's Translate & Adapt app or another translation app, and use Shopify Markets to give the language its own subfolder. Shopify then adds hreflang tags. Have a native Thai speaker edit the translations, and fill in translated SEO titles and descriptions for key pages.

Do Shopify SEO apps actually help?

Some do, for specific jobs: bulk editing alt text and meta fields on a large catalogue, finding broken links, or adding structured data a theme lacks. They cannot write good product copy or fix a slow theme, and many add scripts that slow the store. Check whether your theme already outputs structured data before adding an app that does the same, to avoid duplicates.

Should my product descriptions differ from my Shopee and Lazada listings?

Yes, ideally. When the same text appears on a marketplace and on your store, search engines usually choose one version to show, and the marketplace often wins. Write a fuller, original description on your own store, with sizing, materials, care, delivery and payment details, and keep marketplace listings shorter. The store page then has a reason to rank on its own.
