What is different about WordPress in Thailand?
The software is the same everywhere, but a WordPress site serving Thai customers has to get a handful of local things right. Content usually runs in Thai and English, and Thai text needs suitable fonts. Payments are expected through PromptPay, cards and cash on delivery, with delivery through Thai couriers.
Forms fall under Thailand's PDPA, and VAT-registered sellers may issue e-Tax invoices. Hosting location affects both speed for Thai visitors and where personal data sits.
None of this needs special software. It needs the right theme, a few well-chosen plugins and settings made with Thailand in mind from day one. The sections below take each point in turn. For more reading on platforms, our WordPress and platforms guides collect the related posts.
Thai language: admin, themes and fonts
WordPress has an official Thai translation, published through th.wordpress.org. Set the site language to Thai under Settings, General and the dashboard, date labels and many theme strings switch to Thai. Staff who are more comfortable in Thai can then edit pages without learning English menu names. Plugins are translated separately and to varying degrees, so some screens will stay in English.
Is your theme Thai-ready?
Many themes are designed and tested only with English text. Before you commit, paste a real Thai paragraph into a test page and check three things: that the line height leaves room for vowels and tone marks above and below the letters, that headings in Thai do not overflow on a phone, and that buttons with longer Thai labels still fit.
Fonts and line breaks
Thai has no spaces between words, so browsers need help deciding where a line can break, and some fonts render Thai poorly or not at all. Choose a web font designed for Thai, load only the weights you use, and check long headings on a narrow screen. Font choice deserves its own read, and we keep that detail in our separate post on Thai fonts for websites.
One site in Thai and English
WordPress does not handle two languages on its own, which is why multilingual website development is a planning job, not a plugin install. The usual route is a translation plugin that links each Thai page to its English twin and adds a language switcher and the hreflang tags search engines use.
The alternative is WordPress Multisite, where Thai and English run as two linked sites under one installation, which suits larger sites with different content per language. Whichever you pick, decide early whether English lives at /en/ or on a subdomain, and write each language for its own readers rather than translating word for word.
Hosting close to your customers
Where your server sits affects three things.
- Speed. Every page request travels to the server and back. A server in Thailand or nearby Singapore is physically closer to Thai visitors than one in the US or Europe, which usually shortens that round trip. A content delivery network can narrow the gap for images and files, but the first response still comes from your server.
- Support hours. If the site goes down on a Saturday evening in Bangkok, a host whose support works in your time zone, and ideally in Thai, is worth a lot.
- Data location. Form entries and customer accounts are personal data under the PDPA. The Act has rules on sending personal data abroad, so know which country your host and your backups sit in, and mention it in your privacy notice where needed.
We do not recommend one host over another here; the right choice depends on traffic, budget and whether you run a shop. Ask any host for its server locations, backup policy and support hours in writing.
Selling in Thailand with WooCommerce
WooCommerce is the free plugin that turns WordPress into a shop. For Thai customers, the checkout needs to offer the methods they actually use, which is where our WooCommerce store builds start.
Payments
- PromptPay: the QR payment most Thai shoppers expect. Payment gateways that operate in Thailand offer WooCommerce plugins that show a PromptPay QR code at checkout and confirm payment automatically. Check each gateway's current fees on its own pricing page.
- Cards: usually through the same gateway, which handles card data so your site never stores it.
- Cash on delivery: built into WooCommerce. Many Thai online shoppers still choose it, so weigh the returned-parcel risk against the sales you would lose without it.
Shipping
Set shipping zones by province or postcode, and flat or weight-based rates. For courier bookings and tracking with Thailand Post, KEX Express (formerly Kerry Express), Flash Express or J&T, look for a plugin or aggregator service that connects to your chosen courier, and test a real booking before launch.
If you only sell products and want the platform to handle hosting and updates for you, Shopify is the main alternative; our guide to Shopify Thailand for local sellers covers that route. WooCommerce suits stores that also need a content-rich company site, or want full control of their data.
PDPA and e-Tax on a WordPress site
PDPA
Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), fully enforced since 1 June 2022 and overseen by the PDPC, applies to any WordPress form, account or order that collects personal data. On a WordPress site, that means three things: a consent line with an unticked checkbox on each form, a privacy notice page in Thai and English, and a cookie consent plugin that holds analytics and advertising tags back until the visitor agrees. WooCommerce stores also need their checkout wording and account pages reviewed, because they collect addresses and phone numbers.
e-Tax invoices
The Revenue Department runs an e-Tax Invoice and e-Receipt system that lets VAT-registered businesses issue tax invoices electronically instead of on paper. Registration and technical rules are set by the department, and the details are on its e-Tax site. For a WooCommerce shop, the practical question is how order data reaches whatever system issues your invoices, whether that is your accounting software or a service provider. Plan that link before launch, not after the first corporate customer asks for a full tax invoice.
Plugins and the local community
Most plugins you need are the same as anywhere else: forms, SEO, backups, security and consent. The Thai-specific ones are mainly payment gateways, courier connections and translation tools. Keep the list short and choose actively maintained options; our guide to picking each WordPress plugin a business site needs goes through them by job.
Thailand also has an active WordPress community. Bangkok hosted the first WordCamp Asia in 2023, and a WordCamp Bangkok was held in 2025. The official events calendar at events.wordpress.org lists upcoming WordCamps and meetups, which are a good place to meet developers and hear how other Thai businesses run their sites.
Getting help from a WordPress developer in Bangkok
If you are building a simple site yourself, our ten steps on how to build a WordPress website include the Thai settings covered above. If you are coming from another platform, the Wix to WordPress migration guide shows how to move without losing pages or search traffic. Very large or app-like projects sometimes split WordPress into a content backend with a separate front end; headless WordPress explains when that is worth the extra cost.
For everything else, working with a WordPress developer in Bangkok saves time on the local details. Our Business package, from THB 30,000, covers up to fifteen pages in English and Thai on a custom theme with no page builder, with forms and booking or enquiry flows. The E-commerce package, from THB 50,000, builds on WooCommerce or Shopify with PromptPay, cards, COD, Thai couriers, product import and e-Tax invoice setup. Every build can be PDPA-ready, with cookie consent, a privacy notice and consented forms. Prices are indicative and a typical project takes about 15 days, longer for large catalogues.
See how much a WordPress website costs, or message us on WhatsApp, every day from 10:00 to 19:00 Bangkok time. Our office is at 2056 New Phetchaburi Road, Huai Khwang; please arrange a visit in advance on WhatsApp or by email rather than walking in.
