Should you build your website yourself?
Build it yourself when the site is a test, a hobby or a one-person service where people find you through referrals and the website only needs to confirm you exist. A builder such as Wix or Hostinger, or an AI generator, will give you a tidy page in an afternoon, and nobody will lose sleep if it is plain.
Hire when revenue depends on the site. If hotel guests book from it, clinic patients compare you on it, a buyer in another country judges your factory by it, or you want it to bring enquiries from Google in Thai and English, the cost of a weak site is larger than the cost of a proper build. The work is not only design: it is page structure, copy that answers questions in the right order, mobile speed, PDPA consent and a layout that pushes visitors toward WhatsApp, LINE or a form.
A quick way to decide
- DIY fits if you have one service, one language, fewer than five pages and spare evenings.
- A designer fits if you need two languages, booking or enquiry flows, a shop, or you are replacing a site that already gets traffic.
- Somewhere between: build a simple page now, then plan a proper site once the business proves itself.
If you only need one campaign page rather than a full site, read the difference between a website and a landing page before you choose a tool.
Builder, AI tool or web designer compared
The table compares the three routes on the things owners usually underestimate. Money is only one line; time and risk matter as much.
| Website builder (Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger) | AI website generator | Web designer on WordPress | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your time | Many evenings: learning the editor, writing, picking images, testing | Minutes for a draft, then hours rewriting and fixing | A few meetings, content review and approvals |
| Upfront cost | Low; you pay a subscription | Low; usually part of a builder subscription | One-time build, from THB 10,000 with us |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly or yearly plan plus paid apps | Same as the builder it runs on | Hosting, domain and optional maintenance |
| Result | Template look, limited structure | Generic layout and copy | Pages planned around your customers |
| Thai and English | Possible, often awkward | Thai copy usually weak | Planned bilingual structure |
| Main risk | Outgrowing the platform | Thin, similar-looking content | Choosing the wrong designer |
| Moving later | Hard; design stays on the platform | Hard; same as the builder | Open source; move host when you like |
What website builders do well
A website builder is a hosted service where you pick a template, drag blocks around and publish, with hosting, security updates and the editor bundled into one subscription. The well-known names are Wix, Squarespace and Hostinger's builder, and Canva now publishes simple websites too. For the right job they are genuinely good.
Where they shine
- Speed to first page. You can have something live in a day without talking to anyone.
- No server work. Updates, SSL and backups are the platform's problem, not yours.
- Predictable billing. You pay a monthly or yearly plan; check the current price on the Wix plans page or Squarespace's pricing page, as they change.
Where they pinch
The limits show up later. Templates are shared by thousands of sites, so a Bangkok clinic can end up looking like a London yoga studio. Useful features such as booking, extra languages or better forms often come as paid apps, and the monthly total creeps up. Thai text can render with poor line breaks or a font that lacks proper Thai glyphs. And the design lives inside the platform: if you leave, you rebuild.
Canva deserves a separate word: it is excellent for graphics, and its websites can now run to several pages, but it is a design tool that publishes pages rather than a content system for a growing business site with search in mind. If you are weighing builders against each other rather than against hiring someone, the right comparison is a platform one, such as WordPress vs Webflow for more design-led teams.
AI website builders in 2026
AI website creation is now a standard feature: you type a sentence about your business, and the tool returns a full site with sections, stock images and copy. Wix, Hostinger and WordPress-based AI tools all offer a version of it. As a starting draft it is impressive, and for a placeholder site it can be enough.
What the AI gets wrong
- Thai copy. Generated Thai often reads like a translation: stiff, sometimes wrong in register, and occasionally just incorrect. Thai customers notice at once.
- Structure. The tool guesses your pages. It does not know that your guests ask about airport transfers before prices, or that your B2B buyers want a spec sheet and a factory address.
- Search. Many businesses get near-identical text from similar prompts. Google has little reason to rank a page that says what every other generated page says.
- Facts. AI fills gaps with confident claims. You must check every line, or it may list services, hours or prices you never offered.
Used well, AI is a helper for outlines and first drafts. Used as the whole process, it produces a site that looks finished but does not persuade anyone. If you already have an older site and are thinking of refreshing it with AI, our website redesign guide covers that decision properly.
Is WordPress a website builder
Partly. WordPress itself is free, open-source software that runs a large share of the web; you install it on hosting you choose and own the files. It becomes a website builder when you add a drag-and-drop page builder plugin, and many hosts now bundle an AI WordPress website builder on top. That is why the question "website builder or WordPress" is confusing: WordPress can be either.
WordPress with a page builder
This is the DIY route on WordPress. You get ownership and a huge plugin library, but also the upkeep: plugin updates, conflicts, security and speed are now your job. Page builders add a lot of code, which tends to slow pages on the mid-range phones many visitors use.
WordPress built by a developer
Here a developer writes a custom theme for your site with no page builder, so pages stay light, the editor only shows the fields you need, and there is less to break. This is how we build on our Business package, from THB 30,000. Our Starter package, from THB 10,000, is up to five pages with custom design, WordPress, mobile-first layout, contact, WhatsApp and LINE buttons, on-page SEO and PDPA cookie consent. If you want the line between design work and build work explained, read what is website development and how it differs from design.
What you get from a web designer
A good designer is not paid for making things pretty. You are paying for decisions you would otherwise make by trial and error.
Structure
Which pages you need, what goes first on each, and how a visitor gets from Google to a WhatsApp message in three taps. For a restaurant website that may be menu, location and booking; for an exporter it is products, certifications and a clear enquiry form.
Thai and English that both read naturally
A bilingual site is two audiences, not one site run through a translator. Thai visitors expect LINE, local phrasing and prices they can compare; foreign visitors want English that sounds written, not converted. Thai typography needs proper fonts and line spacing so vowels and tone marks do not collide.
Conversion and compliance
Buttons in the right places, forms that ask only what you need, PDPA consent on cookies and forms, and pages that load fast on mobile data. These details rarely appear in a builder template.
Our small business websites page shows how this works for owner-run firms, and the article on design tips for small business sites is useful even if you decide to build yourself. If you are leaning toward hiring, our guide on how to choose a web design agency explains what to ask before you sign.
Making the call
Count your own hours honestly. Learning an editor, writing every page, sourcing photos, checking the site on several phones and fixing Thai line breaks can take a first-timer several weekends. If your time is worth more running the business, the subscription is not the real cost.
Before you decide, answer these
- Will customers pay, book or enquire through this site?
- Do you need Thai and English, or only one?
- Will you still want this platform in three years, and can you leave it?
- Who will handle PDPA consent and the privacy notice?
- Who updates the site after launch, and how often?
If most answers point to "the site matters", hiring usually pays off. A typical project with us takes about 15 days; our guide on how long website design takes explains what speeds it up and what slows it down.
