How to sell internationally from Thailand online with your own store

A practical route for Thai brands selling abroad from their own store: first markets, prices and payments, international shipping, duties and country versions.

Can you sell internationally from Thailand with your own store?

Yes, you can sell internationally from Thailand with your own online store, and the brands that do it well start narrow.

Pick one or two countries where you already have signals: overseas orders arriving through chat, visitors in your analytics, tourists who bought in your Bangkok shop and asked about delivery, or a diaspora community that knows your product. Launching to "the whole world" means pricing, shipping and duties for dozens of countries at once, and most of them will never order.

For each candidate market, answer four questions before any build work: can your product legally enter it, what does shipping cost for a typical order, who will pay the import taxes, and how will buyers pay. If one of those answers is "we do not know", that country waits. The domestic picture is a different story; our look at where e-commerce in Thailand is heading covers local buying habits, while this guide is about buyers outside the country.

Should you sell on your own store or a global marketplace?

Global marketplaces such as Amazon and Etsy bring buyers who already trust the checkout. In return you accept their fees, their rules on listings and returns, and very little direct contact with customers. Handmade and craft sellers often find Etsy a natural fit; Amazon suits products that compete on search within a category and can meet its fulfilment requirements.

Your own store is slower to build traffic for, but the customer relationship, the brand presentation and the margin stay with you. Many Thai brands run both: a marketplace to test demand and reach new buyers, and their own site for repeat customers, wholesale enquiries and full product stories. Browsing strong e-commerce websites from Thailand is a good way to see how brands present themselves when the store is theirs.

Which platform for an international store

Shopify handles multiple markets, currencies and languages from one admin through Shopify Markets. A WooCommerce store can do the same with extensions for currency and language, which gives more control and more to maintain. Our side-by-side comparison of e-commerce platforms for Thai sellers goes through the trade-offs in detail.

Currencies, prices and payments

Buyers abroad want to see prices in their own currency and pay the way they always do. Two decisions matter.

Converted or set prices

Automatic conversion from baht is quick, but it produces prices like USD 23.47 that look careless. Setting rounded prices per market takes more work and lets you build shipping and duties into the figure. Remember that the baht moves: review set prices every few months, or your margin drifts.

Payment methods

PromptPay means nothing to a buyer in Sydney or Berlin. International buyers expect Visa and Mastercard, often PayPal, and increasingly Apple Pay and Google Pay. Check two things with any provider: which currencies it can charge in, and when and at what rate it settles to your Thai bank account. Our overview of how to choose a payment gateway for a Thai store compares the local and international options, and if you sell on Shopify, our guide to Shopify payments in Thailand explains which providers a Thai store can use.

Charge in the buyer's currency where your gateway allows it. A card statement showing a baht charge, converted by the buyer's bank with its own fee, is a common reason for disputes.

How do you ship orders abroad from Thailand?

You have two broad families of options. Thailand Post offers international services including EMS World, with tracking, and cheaper untracked or partly tracked services for light items. International express couriers such as DHL, FedEx and UPS are faster and handle customs clearance more actively, at a higher price. Some Thai logistics platforms resell international services from several carriers through one account.

Service names, weight limits and rates change, so take the current figures from each carrier's own page when you set up checkout rates. Offer the buyer a choice where you can: an economical tracked option and an express one.

Duties, taxes and paperwork

Every international parcel raises one question the buyer cares about: will I have to pay something at the door? There are two ways to answer it.

  • DAP (delivered at place). You ship, and the buyer pays any import duty, VAT and handling fees on arrival. Cheaper for you to set up, but surprise charges lead to refused parcels and angry reviews.
  • DDP (delivered duty paid). You collect the taxes at checkout and they are paid before delivery. Better for the buyer, and supported by express couriers and some platforms, but you need accurate product classification and prices that absorb the cost.

Destination rules change

Low-value import rules have tightened in major markets. The European Union removed its VAT exemption for small consignments in July 2021 and introduced the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS), which lets sellers collect EU VAT at checkout on goods up to EUR 150. In the United States, the duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value shipments was suspended for imports from all countries in 2025. Both rules were checked as of September 2026; confirm the current position on the official pages listed in the sources below before you set prices.

Paperwork matters too: every parcel needs a customs declaration with an honest description, value and product category. Your Thai side still counts. Company registration, covered in our guide to DBD registration for an e-commerce website, and invoicing rules, covered in our note on e-Tax invoices for Thai online stores, apply to export sales as well; ask your accountant how VAT on exports applies to you.

Products that need extra checks

Some of Thailand's best-known exports are also the hardest to post. Food, cosmetics, herbal products and supplements are regulated at both ends: the Thai FDA governs products made and sold in Thailand, and the destination country has its own rules on ingredients, labelling and who may import. A balm that is legal to sell in Bangkok may need registration, an importer of record or different labels before it can be sold online to buyers in another country.

Carriers add their own limits. Liquids, aerosols, items containing batteries, perishables and anything flammable may be restricted or banned on some services. Before listing a product for a market, check the carrier's prohibited items list and the destination's import rules, and keep the answer on file. On the website, restrict those products from being shipped to markets where they are not allowed, instead of relying on buyers to read a notice.

Languages and country versions

English carries a Thai brand a long way, and Thai remains useful for Thai buyers living abroad. If you later add markets that need other languages, each language needs a proper translation by someone who writes it natively, not an automatic widget. Search engines should see one version per language or country, linked with hreflang tags so a buyer in Singapore lands on the English page with Singapore dollar prices and a buyer in Bangkok lands on the Thai one.

A few practical rules: keep one URL per version, let visitors switch country manually rather than forcing a redirect by IP address, and translate the checkout, shipping and returns pages first, because that is where uncertainty kills orders.

Customer service and returns across borders

Bangkok is seven hours ahead of the UK in winter and eleven or twelve ahead of the US East Coast, so a buyer's evening question arrives while you sleep. Answer that in advance: an order-status page, clear delivery estimates per country, and an FAQ covering duties and returns. State your support hours in the buyer's terms, for example "we reply during Bangkok business hours".

Returns from abroad are expensive, often more than the item is worth. Decide the policy per market: full returns, store credit, or refund without return for low-value items. Write it down plainly on the site, including who pays return postage and what happens to parcels refused because of import charges.

A launch checklist for going abroad

Common questions

Can I sell overseas from a Thai website?

Yes. A store built on Shopify or WooCommerce can take orders from abroad, charge in foreign currencies through a suitable payment provider and ship with Thailand Post or international couriers. The work is less about the website and more about decisions per market: whether your product may enter, how you price shipping, and who pays import taxes. Start with one or two countries where you already see interest.

Which payment methods do international buyers expect?

Mostly Visa and Mastercard, with PayPal still common and Apple Pay and Google Pay growing. Thai methods such as PromptPay rarely help overseas buyers. Choose a provider that can charge in the buyer's currency and settle to your Thai bank account, and check its current fees and settlement terms on its own pricing page. Showing local currency prices at checkout also reduces disputes over bank conversion charges.

Who pays import duties, me or my customer?

It depends on the terms you choose. Under DAP the buyer pays duties and taxes on delivery, which is simpler for you but can surprise them. Under DDP you collect those charges at checkout and they are settled before delivery, which buyers prefer. Some destinations have their own schemes, such as the EU's IOSS for lower-value goods. Whichever you choose, say it clearly at checkout.

Do I need a separate website for each country?

No. One store can serve several markets with country or language versions, each with its own currency, prices and shipping rules. Shopify Markets does this from one admin, and WooCommerce can do it with extensions. What matters for search is that each version has its own URL and hreflang tags connecting them, and that visitors can switch version themselves.

Which products are hard to ship abroad from Thailand?

Food, cosmetics, herbal remedies and supplements need the most checking, because both Thai FDA rules and the destination's import rules apply. Liquids, aerosols, batteries, perishables and flammable items may be restricted by carriers. Check the carrier's prohibited items list and the destination's import requirements for each product and market, and block shipping on the website where a product is not allowed.
