The short answer
For most Thai brands, no. Shopify Plus starts at a monthly fee many times higher than the standard plans, and its main extras (deep checkout customisation, advanced B2B, expansion stores, higher API limits and priority support) only pay for themselves at high order volumes or with a complex operation.
A growing store selling a few hundred orders a month in Thailand is almost always better served by the Grow or Advanced plan plus a handful of well-chosen apps.
Plus starts to make sense when you run several storefronts for different countries or brands, sell wholesale and retail from one catalogue, need checkout logic the standard plans cannot express, or when the fees you would save at your volume approach the subscription cost. This page covers only that upgrade decision. For the wider platform picture, including themes, Thai payments and shipping, read our complete guide to Shopify in Thailand.
A note on us: we build Shopify stores, but we are not a Shopify Partner or Plus partner and do not claim to be. Everything below comes from Shopify's own public pages, linked in the sources.
Shopify's plans at a glance
Shopify renames and repackages its plans from time to time, so treat this as a snapshot and check the pricing page before deciding. At the time of writing the line-up is:
- Basic. For new stores: the full storefront and checkout, a small number of staff accounts and standard reports.
- Grow (previously called the Shopify plan). More staff accounts and fuller reporting; the usual home for a growing SME.
- Advanced. More staff accounts again, custom reports and lower third-party transaction fees than the plans below it.
- Plus. The enterprise tier, sold on a contract rather than as a simple monthly toggle, with the extra features covered below.
There is also a starter-style plan for selling through social links, which does not give you a full online store and is not relevant to this decision.
The jump in price between Advanced and Plus is far larger than between any two lower plans. That gap is the whole question: are the Plus-only features worth that difference for your business, this year?
Shopify vs Plus: features side by side
The table compares the areas where Plus genuinely differs. Details shift as Shopify moves features between plans, so confirm each row on Shopify's own feature pages before you sign anything.
What the differences mean in practice
Checkout. On standard plans the checkout is largely fixed: you change branding and add some apps. Plus lets you customise the information, shipping and payment steps with checkout extensions, for example hiding COD for certain postcodes or adding a delivery-date picker.
Shopify Functions. Functions let developers write custom discount, shipping and payment logic that runs inside Shopify. Public apps using Functions work on all plans; building your own custom Function app is a Plus feature.
B2B and expansion stores. Since April 2026, Shopify's help centre lists native B2B basics (company accounts, net payment terms, price breaks and up to three active catalogs) on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, customer-specific price lists, deposits and partial payments, plus extra stores for other countries or brands under one contract.
| Area | Basic to Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout customisation | Branding and app blocks | Checkout extensions for information, shipping and payment steps |
| Custom Shopify Functions | Via public apps only | Build your own custom apps with Functions |
| Automation | Shopify Flow on eligible plans | Flow plus Plus-only automation tools such as Launchpad |
| B2B wholesale | Native basics on all plans, up to three catalogs | Unlimited catalogs, customer-specific pricing, deposits and partial payments |
| Extra stores | One store per plan | Expansion stores included |
| Staff accounts | Limited, rising by plan | Much higher limit |
| API limits | Standard | Higher limits |
| Support | Standard support | Priority support |
What does Shopify Plus cost?
At the time of writing, Shopify's Plus pricing page quotes a starting price of roughly USD 2,300 a month on a multi-year contract, with a higher monthly rate on shorter terms. For complex, higher-volume businesses, Shopify says the platform fee can become variable, based on revenue. Prices are in US dollars, so the baht cost moves with the exchange rate. Read the current page yourself before planning; enterprise pricing changes and can be negotiated.
Put that next to your real numbers. Take last year's online revenue, estimate the transaction fees, staff time and app subscriptions Plus would actually remove, and compare the total with a year of Plus fees. If the saving is small, Plus is a cost, not an investment.
A worked example, not a client
Suppose a Bangkok skincare brand sells around two thousand orders a month online through a third-party gateway. On standard plans it pays Shopify's extra fee for not using Shopify Payments, plus a few hundred dollars a month in apps. Unless those two lines together come close to the Plus subscription, it should stay where it is and spend the difference on stock, product photography or a better site.
Also count the one-time work. Plus projects usually involve checkout extensions, B2B setup or expansion stores, and each of those is development time on top of the subscription.
Thailand-specific factors
Three local points change the maths for a store run from Thailand.
Shopify Payments is not the default here
Shopify's supported-countries list for Shopify Payments did not include Thailand at the time of writing, as our guide to Shopify payments in Thailand explains. Thai stores therefore use a third-party gateway, and Shopify charges an extra fee on those orders at a rate that falls as you move up. When we checked in September 2026, the pricing page listed 0.2% on Plus; confirm the current figure in writing.
Gateways decide the local checkout
PromptPay QR, Thai cards and bank apps come through local gateways, not through Plus itself. Upgrading does not add a Thai payment method you could not already get. If PromptPay is what your buyers want, compare the options in our overview of Thai payment gateway choices, or read about a bank-run option in our piece on the SCB payment gateway for online shops.
Markets and languages
Shopify Markets, which handles currencies, domains and languages per country, is available on standard plans. A Thai and English store with prices in baht and a second market abroad does not need Plus for that alone. Expansion stores only matter once each country needs its own catalogue, team or checkout rules.
How do you know you have outgrown standard Shopify?
No single trigger forces the move. Look for several of these at once, and for problems that apps or better processes cannot solve.
- Checkout rules you cannot expressYou need logic in the shipping or payment steps, such as hiding options by customer group, that standard plans do not allow.
- Wholesale and retail in one placeTrade buyers need their own prices and payment terms, and B2B apps have become fragile.
- Several storefrontsSeparate stores for brands or countries with their own teams and catalogues.
- Staff account limitsYou keep sharing logins because the plan limit is too low.
- Flash sales that strain the storeBig campaigns, such as 11.11 or Songkran promotions, need scheduled changes and higher API limits.
- Fee maths favours PlusThird-party transaction fees and app costs you would remove are close to the Plus subscription.
Cheaper routes before Plus
Move up to Advanced first
Advanced gives lower third-party transaction fees, more staff accounts and custom reports for a fraction of the Plus price. For many Thai brands that is the right ceiling for years.
Use apps with a plan to replace them
Wholesale pricing, bundles, subscriptions and delivery-date pickers all exist as apps. Keep a list of what each costs per month. When the total becomes large, that list is also your business case for Plus.
Consider WooCommerce
If your pain is customisation cost rather than scale, a WooCommerce store on WordPress gives full control over checkout without a platform subscription, though you take on hosting and updates. It also connects directly to Thai payment options, which we explain in our guide to accepting PromptPay on WooCommerce.
Upgrading later is not a rebuild
Moving from a standard plan to Plus keeps your store, products, customers and orders; Shopify switches the plan on the same store. The real work is using the new features: checkout extensions, B2B setup and any expansion stores. So there is little penalty in waiting until the numbers justify it.
If your question is still about the business model rather than the plan, our article on dropshipping with Shopify from Thailand covers that. When you are ready to build or rebuild, see how we build Shopify stores for Thai sellers and check our e-commerce website prices: from THB 50,000 as an indicative one-time starting point, with the final price in your written quote. A typical build takes about 15 days; large catalogues take longer. WhatsApp or call +66 93 004 4098, or email service@websitedevelopmentbangkok.com.
