Dropshipping for Shopify when you are based in Thailand: how it works and the real costs

Dropshipping on Shopify from Thailand works, but margins are thin, delivery is slow and import tax rules changed. Here is the honest picture.

Can you run Shopify dropshipping from Thailand?

Yes, you can run a dropshipping store on Shopify, the hosted store platform, while living and trading in Thailand. The model is simple: you list a supplier's products in your store, a customer pays you, and the order passes to the supplier, who ships it straight to the buyer. You never hold stock.

Your profit is the gap between your selling price and the supplier's price, minus every fee, refund and advert in between. That gap is usually small, and it is the part the online videos skip.

On Shopify the mechanics run through apps. A supplier app imports product titles, photos and prices into your catalogue, then pushes paid orders back to the supplier and returns a tracking number. Shopify keeps its own guide to the model, and it is worth reading before you pay for anything. If you want the wider platform picture first, including plans, Thai payment options and themes, start with our Shopify Thailand guide and come back here for the dropshipping question alone.

Three things decide whether it works

  • Who you sell to. Thai buyers and overseas buyers expect very different things.
  • Where the stock sits. A warehouse in Shenzhen and one in Samut Prakan give you two different businesses.
  • How you get paid. Shopify's own payment service is not available to a Thai-registered store at the time of writing, so gateway choice matters from day one.

Selling to Thai buyers or to the world?

These are two separate businesses that happen to share a platform.

Selling inside Thailand

Thai shoppers compare you with Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop, where the same gadget often sits with free shipping and delivery in two or three days. A Shopify store selling identical overseas stock at a higher price, with a two week wait, struggles. What can work is a niche the marketplaces serve badly: a curated product range, Thai-language product copy that actually explains the item, and fast local delivery. That usually means a Thai supplier holding stock, not an overseas app.

Selling abroad from Thailand

Some Bangkok-based owners run stores aimed at the US, Europe or Australia, with suppliers shipping from China or from warehouses in the buyer's own country. Thailand is then just where you live and where your company is registered. The competition is global, customer service happens across time zones, and payouts must reach a Thai bank account. It can work, but your Thai base helps little beyond a lower cost of living.

Decide which one you are building before you choose a supplier, a theme or a payment gateway. Almost every later choice follows from it.

Suppliers: overseas apps or Thai fulfilment

Overseas supplier apps give you a huge catalogue in minutes. The catch is control. You cannot check quality before each parcel leaves, product photos are shared by thousands of other stores, and a supplier can raise prices or drop an item without telling you. Order a sample of everything you list and photograph it yourself; that one habit removes a lot of refund pain later.

Thai stock-holding suppliers and fulfilment warehouses are fewer and usually need a phone call or a LINE chat rather than an app install. Prices are often higher per unit, but parcels move within days through Thailand Post, KEX Express (formerly Kerry Express), Flash Express or J&T, and returns stay inside the country. Many will pack under your brand if your volumes are steady.

The delivery times above are typical ranges, not promises; ask each supplier for their own figures in writing.

Shipping times, COD and returns

Thai online shoppers are used to quick delivery and to paying cash when the parcel arrives. A store that cannot offer either has to explain why, clearly, on the product page and at checkout, not in small print after payment.

  • Delivery estimates. Show a realistic range per product, based on the supplier's real record, not the fastest case.
  • COD. Only practical when stock ships from inside Thailand through a courier that collects cash. Refused COD parcels still cost you the shipping both ways, so the mechanics matter; our guide to how cash on delivery works for Thai stores explains them in detail.
  • Returns. Sending an item back to an overseas supplier often costs more than the item. Many dropshippers simply refund and let the buyer keep it. Budget for that.
  • Tracking. Send the tracking link by email and, where the buyer prefers it, by LINE. Most "where is my order" messages vanish once people can see the parcel moving.

Taking payments from Thailand

Shopify Payments is available only in a set list of countries, and at the time of writing Thailand is not one of them. Check Shopify's current list before you plan around it. A Thai store therefore connects a third-party provider, and Shopify may charge an extra transaction fee on each order that does not go through its own service; the rate depends on your plan, so read Shopify's pricing page rather than trusting a figure from a video.

The usual routes are a Thai gateway listed for Shopify in Thailand that supports PromptPay QR and local cards, plus PayPal for overseas buyers. Each has its own onboarding checks, payout timing and fees. Shopify does not generally offer Stripe as a separate provider, so unless it appears in your admin's payment list for Thailand, Stripe fits a WooCommerce build better. We cover the Shopify side in our guide to Shopify payments and gateways in Thailand, the Stripe route in using Stripe from a Thai business, and a wider side-by-side in comparing payment gateways for Thai stores.

One warning specific to dropshipping: gateways watch for long delivery times and high refund rates. A store that ships in three weeks and refunds often can have payouts held. Choose products and suppliers that keep disputes low.

Registration, tax and import VAT

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Rules change, so confirm each point with an accountant before you launch.

Business registration

Selling online from Thailand is a commercial activity. The Department of Business Development (DBD) handles commercial registration for online sellers, and its site explains which registration applies to an individual or a company. Foreign owners also have to consider the Foreign Business Act and their visa conditions before trading at all.

VAT

A business must register for VAT with the Revenue Department once its turnover passes the threshold the department sets (check the current figure on its site). Once registered, you charge VAT on Thai sales and issue tax invoices; many Thai business buyers expect an e-Tax invoice.

VAT on low-value imports

Thailand used to exempt small imported parcels from VAT. From mid-2024 the government removed that exemption, so VAT now applies to low-value goods coming into the country. For a store selling overseas stock to Thai buyers, that tax lands somewhere: on your price, on your margin or on the buyer at the door. Check the current collection rules with the Revenue Department or Thai Customs.

PDPA and your supplier

Every order sends a customer's name, address and phone number to your supplier. Under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562, you remain responsible for that data, and the PDPA penalties and fines can reach your business if that data is mishandled. Name the disclosure in your privacy notice, put a data processing agreement in place with the supplier, and check the Act's rules on sending personal data outside Thailand.

What does a dropshipping store really cost?

Before your first sale, list every cost that sits between the supplier's price and your bank account. Most failed stores did not lack products; they lacked margin once these lines were added up. Advertising is usually the largest line, and it is outside what we do: we build stores, we do not run ads, so get quotes for that separately.

  • Shopify planA monthly subscription on the plan you choose; check Shopify's pricing page for the current rate.
  • AppsSupplier, reviews, upsell and translation apps often charge monthly each. Five small apps add up.
  • Transaction and gateway feesThe gateway's percentage, plus any Shopify fee for using a third-party provider.
  • SamplesOrder and test every product before listing it.
  • Refunds and lost parcelsSet aside a share of revenue; cross-border orders go missing.
  • Import VATDecide whether your price absorbs it or the buyer pays it.
  • AdvertisingUsually the biggest cost for a store with no existing audience.
  • AccountingBookkeeping, VAT filing and e-Tax invoices once you are registered.

When a stocked store makes more sense

If you already make or source a product in Thailand, holding your own stock usually beats dropshipping. You control quality and packaging, you can ship next day with a Thai courier, you can offer COD and PromptPay, and your margin is not shared with an app. It is also easier to build a brand people search for by name, which lowers your dependence on paid traffic.

A sensible path for many owners: test demand with a small range, then move the best sellers into your own stock or a local fulfilment warehouse. Shopify handles both models in the same store, so you do not have to rebuild when you switch. Larger brands sometimes ask whether they need the enterprise tier at that point; our look at whether Shopify Plus is worth the cost answers that.

When you are ready for a proper store, we set up Shopify or WooCommerce with PromptPay, cards, COD, Thai couriers, product import and e-Tax invoice setup, plus staff training. A typical project takes around 15 days; a large catalogue can take longer.

Common questions

Is dropshipping legal in Thailand?

Dropshipping as a business model is not banned in Thailand. What matters is how you run it: registering the business correctly, handling VAT once you pass the threshold, selling products that are allowed to be imported, describing delivery times honestly and protecting customer data under the PDPA. Foreign owners should also check the Foreign Business Act and their visa conditions. Confirm the details with an accountant or lawyer before launch.

Do I need to register a dropshipping store with the DBD?

Online sellers in Thailand generally need commercial registration, and the Department of Business Development explains which registration applies to individuals and to companies. The DBD also runs a trust mark scheme for online shops. Because the exact requirement depends on your structure and what you sell, read the DBD's current guidance or ask an accountant rather than relying on a forum answer.

Can I dropship to Thai customers from China?

Yes, technically. The problems are commercial. Delivery often takes one to three weeks, VAT now applies to low-value imports, COD is rarely possible, and returns are expensive. Your buyers can often find the same item on Shopee or Lazada, delivered faster. A Thai supplier holding stock locally usually gives a better customer experience for a Thai audience.

Which payment methods can a Thai Shopify dropshipping store use?

At the time of writing Shopify Payments is not offered in Thailand, so you connect a third-party provider. Common choices are a Thai gateway supporting PromptPay and local cards, and PayPal for overseas buyers. Shopify does not generally offer Stripe as a separate provider, so check your admin's list. Shopify may add its own fee for third-party gateways, depending on your plan. Check each provider's current pricing and onboarding rules before you commit.

Is Shopify dropshipping still profitable?

It can be, but we will not quote income figures, and you should distrust anyone who does. Profit depends on product choice, supplier reliability, refund rates and, above all, advertising cost. Add up the full cost stack for one order before you launch. If the margin only works with perfect conditions, consider holding a small amount of your own stock instead.
